Located within Edinburgh’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, this three-bedroom new build mews house represents a sensitive "missing link" in the one of the city’s earliest mews lanes. After the mid-20th-century demolition of the original structure, the sloping site was reduced to a utilitarian concrete slab for parking, leaving void in a street that had lost all but one of its historic mews buildings.
Inspired by traditional Georgian proportions and materials, the house aims to reinstate the lost character of the street whilst providing the modern living requirements of its owners. Traditional materials are used on the street elevation in the form of rubble sandstone walls pointed with lime mortar with ashlar quoins, along with timber astragalled slim-line double glazed windows and doors. The robust timber boarded front and garage doors reflect the original joinery of the stables buildings that would have once lined the street. The focal point is a sweeping overdoor canopy with profiled timber brackets and a lead finish. Although more ornate than the original service buildings would have warranted, this element signals the transition from a historic stables building to a contemporary residence of high craft.
In contrast to the more formal street frontage, the rear elevation reveals a softer character with Scottish larch boarding painted in a muted French grey. A discreet balcony sits above a compact boot room, providing a sheltered vantage point over a garden, with the townhouses on Queen Street to the north. In a notable feat of adaptive reuse the garden has been built over the original slab that formed the parking area, transforming a utilitarian slab into a tranquil urban oasis.
While the exterior honours its New Town context, the interior is designed for modern life. With a focus on spatial efficiency and indoor-outdoor flow, the design delivers a functional family home that respects the vernacular of this historic Georgian lane.
