Lena Sideri

Lena joined Simpson & Brown in 2022 and has assisted with the preparation of a variety of heritage reports which included producing illustrations for a variety of buildings across the UK and abroad. Lena has been assisting with the production of conservation management plans and heritage statements for sites in the Middle East.

Lena has developed a creative and critical understanding of conservation issues and approaches. Her research interests encompass the social role of heritage; sustainability, and heritage conservation policy. She has a particular focus on the intersection of conservation with international environmental legislation and sustainable development. She is particularly interested in the concept of sustainable heritage and the potential of heritage practices and experiences in addressing the most pressing global challenges.

Lena recently completed the MSc in Heritage at the University of Stirling with distinction. Her work-related dissertation explored the social value of retrofitting heritage buildings by discussing user values using four case studies across Scotland. Through this study, she interacted with homeowners, community groups, local authority officers, and other consultees. She is currently a PhD student at the University of Stirling. Through an action research approach developed in collaboration with stakeholders, her research examines the views and experiences of users of retrofitted built heritage in Scotland to identify strategies for making thermal retrofitting a viable conservation practice that contributes to heritage values, sustainability and climate change mitigation.
