Sauchie Tower, Clackmannanshire

Sauchie Tower is a 14th century tower house built by William Shaw, the King's Master of Works. The tower has not been occupied since the later building of Old Sauchie house nearby. The roof structure and parapets were lost long ago, but most of the masonry structure survives.

When the Clackmannanshire Heritage Trust took ownership of the tower, they commissioned Simpson & Brown to carry out emergency works. Unstable masonry was propped and a tensioned wire support system was installed around the tower at high level to prevent any masonry collapsing. Having stood unprotected for centuries, the wallheads were extremely wet. The orginial roof structure was reinstated and clad with plywood to shed water away from the wallheads and the long process of drying the masonry began.

The Trust does not yet have a use or owner for the tower, but repairs were carried out in preparation for a future programme of conservation.
