Lindisfarne Castle, Northumberland
Since 1990, Simpson & Brown have been retained by the National Trust to act as consultant architects for Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island, Northumberland.
During this period, Simpson & Brown have prepared two quinquennial reports, and have been responsible for three major phases of building work. The first phase, carried out in 1992, comprised the complete re-roofing of the castle, together with substantial repairs to the parapets and chimneys.
The second phase of work, undertaken in 1996, principally involved a major consolidation and reharling exercise to the masonry of the exposed and inaccessible north elevation, along with repairs to windows and other external features.
The latest phase, completed in 2000, called for an ambitious civil engineering project to stabilise the eroded south rock face and to rebuild the long approach ramp, with a new horonised stone paved surface and riven green oak fencing.
