Auchnaguie, by Dunkeld, Perthshire
This traditional farmstead, comprising farmhouse and steading range, was formerly one of the Atholl Estates farms and was granted a new lease of life when Simpson & Brown's clients, Tighmor, undertook to develop the site for rural lifestyle housing. The buildings were fine examples of the local vernacular and have been converted into modern individual homes that retain many of the original features and materials. Alongside the old, two new timber framed houses have been introduced to complement the grouping.
Simpson & Brown believes that, for both old and new, the use of indigenous materials has practical advantages in terms of proven durability, energy efficiency and aesthetic merits as well as with addressing current issues in respect of sustainability. The properties all have different characters; the farmhouse has been extended to create a better internal layout but remains essentially original, whilst other units are more contemporary. There is a courtyard plan and units with roof terraces that take advantage of spectacular views over the Perthshire countryside.
With all of the units being sold during construction within days of being marketed, there was an opportunity to carry out bespoke touches for the purchasers.
