Churches
Church repair work has been an important part of Simpson & Brown's work since the practice was founded in 1977. The practice has been consultants to over 70 churches of all denominations throughout Scotland and Northern England.
Simpson & Brown's work is based on a thorough initial inspection in which all elements of the building are examined. Recommendations are presented according to categories of urgency and a strategy for repair is proposed. The work is often carried out in a number of annual phases designed according to the resources of the congregation. Most of the practice's church repair work has been grant aided by Historic Scotland.
A typical church repair project will include stone repairs, overhauling the slating and leadwork on the roof and repairs to stained and leaded glass windows. Sometimes the leadwork and gutters have to be redesigned to provide a more effective rainwater disposal. The stone repair often involves the reinstatement of lost features such as crosses, pinnacles and gargoyles.
