Conservation and Restoration

Conservation is "action to secure the survival or preservation of buildings, cultural artefacts, natural resources, energy or any other thing of acknowledged value for the future". Guide to the Principles of the Conservation of Historic Buildings, British Standard 7913: 1998.

"Now, in the age of sustainability, the assumption that old buildings should be replaced with new ones has all but disappeared. Conservation and sustainability is at the heart of what Simpson & Brown do. I expect any building of ours, old or new, to be judged by four criteria, Commodity, Firmness, Delight and Sustainability. Does it work? Is it sound? Does it give pleasure? Does it - and will it - sit lightly on the earth?" James Simpson.
