Tom Addyman
After studying archaeology, Tom spent several years on archaeological work in Central America and the Caribbean. He gained a Masters degree in the Conservation of Historic Buildings, with distinction, from the University of York. Eight years ago he founded Addyman & Kay, later Addyman Associates, which established a reputation as a leader in the field of archaeological recording and analytical study of historic buildings.
Tom has extensive archaeological experience and has participated in over 200 archaeological excavations in the UK and abroad. He has worked for the National Trust for Scotland on several projects including Culzean Castle in Ayrshire and 26-31 Charlotte Square in Edinburgh. He undertook an analytical survey of the Riding House Range at Bolsover Castle in Derbyshire for English Heritage and a similar project involving Queensberry House in Edinburgh for the Scottish Parliament. He oversaw a two-year-long archaeological and analytical study at Newhailes House and Estate in Musselburgh for the National Trust for Scotland.
Tom spent several years gaining experience of traditional masonry construction and the uses of lime and has worked at Lindisfarne Castle for the National Trust, Termon House in Donegal for the Irish Landmark Trust and on various projects with Tim Meek and Rory Young. He has written several Conservation Plans, including that for St Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh.
