Richard Gallie
A member of the Royal Institute of British Architects and the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland, Richard trained at Leicester and qualified in 1983. Following a short spell in London during which time his work was selected for the second RIBA 40 under 40 exhibition, his early career was spent working in the public sector in East Anglia. Here he developed skills in housing and worked with historic buildings. He moved to private practice in Edinburgh in 1987, initially joining the Bamber Gray Partnership. Later as an associate at the Hugh Martin Partnership he worked on projects such as the major refurbishment of the Basil Spence designed Scottish Widows headquarters building in Edinburgh’s St Andrew Square and the construction of a new wing at Gleneagles Hotel in Perthshire.
He joined Simpson & Brown in 2002 and, amongst other contracts, has worked on a series of steading redevelopments such as the sites at Auchnaguie, Borelick and Lawhead. He has also worked on the award winning visitor centre for Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Gardens in Dawyck. His experience and knowledge of the profession has allowed him to contribute to many other projects and this has also helped him to reach the required standard for the RIAS accreditation in building conservation. He acts as a professional practice examiner for the Scottish Schools of Architecture and his varied and diverse workload at present includes projects in Edinburgh’s New Town, the Highlands and the Scottish Borders.
