Hoddom Castle, Dumfriesshire

The group of buildings includes a massive 16th century tower with a spectacular upwards extension in the 17th century. There are also good quality 19th century buildings on the estate. The original tower is heavily scarred following the removal of a 19th century country house which has been built all around it. In our study we had to consider proposals for repair which would leave the building more appropriately finished in relation to its original design but not entirely disguise the historical evidence of the later buildings.”
