Heron Corn Mill

The Heron Corn Mill is an overshot water mill in Beetham, Cumbria. It is a remarkable survival of a mill complete with all its working parts.  The millwheel and machinery have been restored to fulll working order by specialist millwrights working with volunteers.

Simpson & Brown wrote the Conservation Plan for the building, the site, weir, mill race and subsidiary buildings. A phase of essential repairs to the roof and walls was then carried out. Work was also carried out to an adjacent barn for The Heron Corn Mill Trust to form an office for the trust and an education space designed to meet the requirements for community use, drama, performance and presentation.

The exterior was sensitively repaired using lime mortar and left intact as far as possible. Interventions included a new mezzanine level office and projection space. The interior includes a wood pellet stove and underfloor heating. The multi use space has proved to be very successful in meeting the brief and requirements of the Trust and the many people that use it
