Kingsbarns is a new malt whisky distillery on the Cambo Estate, south-east of St Andrews. The category B-listed East Newhall Farm Steading opened in December 2014. The Simpson & Brown proposals preserved the external historic building fabric to create a visitor centre, in conjunction with a new structure on the footprint of the existing central byre, which is the working hub of the new micro-distillery.
Internally, the proposals make a deliberate attempt to respect the disposition of the components of the original steading form. The horse-gang forms the visitor entrance to the distillery with new openings to the café and shop. The modern lean-to extension adjacent to the horse-gang has been replced with a contemporary timber and glass structure housing the new café facilities opening onto a landscaped terrace.
The single-storey south end of the east range and the entire south range of byres and stabling is largely given over to the visitor centre comprising interpretation to the distillery leading to the impressive central doocot showcasing the first cask of whisky off the stills.
The main two storey east range forms the circulation hub of the visitor accommodation providing access on the lower level to the interpretation and distilling areas, as well as the shop and cafe. On the upper level visitors are able to enjoy a dram of whisky in the tasting rooms after the tour of the distillery.
