Bellevue Chapel

Bellevue Chapel is a small Victorian gothic church in the New Town Conservation area of Edinburgh and home to an independent evangelical church. Bellevue Chapel Evangelical Church has an expanding congregation and have commissioned Simpson & Brown to design an extension to the building to maximise the use of the site for community activities and to create a fully accessible main entrance.

With only a small unoccupied part of the site available for development, the design of an extension has been challenging.  The existing Chapel is small but is an important focal point in the locality and so care has been taken to limit the new extension in height and extent so that long views of the Chapel are maintained.  The apparent height of the extension has been reduced by placing the main structure above the level of the roof, matching the spacing of the present wall buttresses and tapering towards the existing building.
