Simpson & Brown was appointed in 2009 to produce ‘A Guide to Castle and Tower-House Restoration in Scotland’ on behalf of Historic Scotland.
There is a long tradition in Scotland of bringing ruined castles back into use. They have been saved by people with a passion for history and a love of ancient buildings. Although restoration is not appropriate in every case, Historic Scotland believes that this tradition should be maintained and encouraged.
The guide is intended for would-be restorers of castles, including architects and advisers, and is based on the knowledge and experience of architects, Historic Scotland, contractors and owners.
The report was written by our architects, archaeologists and architectural historians, and our collaborative approach to the project involved not just historical and technical information, but in-depth analysis of several case studies.
